Grandpa Rae goes fishing!
My dad and I formed a plan for the surprise. My dad asked my grandpa to join him on an early morning road trip for Sunday. My grandpa loves going on any sort of outing, so he didn’t even ask questions, he just agreed to go. My dad planned to meet with me at Tim Hortons around 6:15am, and then we would carpool and meet Joe at his boat. I walked into Tim Hortons and my grandpa was surprised to see me. I asked ‘are you ready to go fishing?’ and he laughed. He thought I was kidding, so he said ‘I forgot my fishing pole’ and to that I said ‘we have you covered’. He finally believed us when my dad explained where we were going. My grandpa was concerned at first because he didn’t have any warm clothing, but my dad had it hidden in the truck the night before. After he realized what we had done, he was SO excited and surprised!! The look on his face was priceless.

Hi Ashley-
Great blog and a wonderful time on the water! I read your fish list and want to know – have you ever tried for eelpout? They are caught through the ice a lot.

Great blog Ash. I never got the chance to fish with either of my grandpa's, at least to my knowledge. My Dad's dad died about a year before I was born and he was an avid fisherman. My other Grampa died when I was 5 but he lived across the country in Pennsylvania and was more of a hunter than fisherman. I fished with my Grandma on my Dad's side a few times at our family lake cabin. However, she wasn't really into fishing so it didn't happen much. However just the two of us spent a fair amount of time together at the cabin when I was old enough to take myself out alone because of that I got to fish a lot more than I otherwise would have. A few years after she died we sold the family cabin, which sucks I loved that place. But it's like that Canadian Songwriter Bruce Cockburn sings: “Everything that exists in time runs out of time some day”

Hi there,
That is just a beautiful, post!
Congratulation and kudos to you for doing things like this for your Grandpa!
When it is often said that fishing is a thing to do with the kids to bond the family, you have just proved it goes both way.Have a good day.

My wife would say “Aaawww, your daddy is so cute” but since this would sound strange coming from my mouth I better say “Your daddy ROCKS!” You guys got into some serious Walleyes, eh! There is nothing like fishing with the family! The older we get, the more we realize it. Cheers!
