Salmon on the FLY!
I was fortunate to get out a few more times for chinook salmon this season and trigger the instinctual aggression bite. In my last few trips, I owe all my success to fly fishing. There’s a lot of discussion on the salmon fishing this time of year, but I feel most comfortable catching the fresher fish (the noticeably lighter coloured, spunkier fish)! It’s not easy to get them irritated enough to bite, but putting the time into it and getting the perfect drift can trigger the snap of a jaw, and the battle of the mighty king!
Perfect (for me) holding size! A smaller male chinook.
The beaded/weighted flies and the single egg pattern flies have worked well!
Matt has recently picked up a fly rod for the first time… and has been successful in landing several fish! This is his biggest salmon (ever)!
We recently met Jeff, another multi-species angler during our creek adventures. He landed this nice female – the only female of the day!
Catching these fish is an absolute blast, and releasing them is even better. Next stop is trout… and I have seen glimpses of steelhead and browns, which has been enough to haunt me. Until next time 🙂
